what i did was i did ad-bc and got -39e^(7t) but that's the wrong answer. I think i am having trouble remembering the simple properties of exponents. if someone could point out where i went wrong.Thanks.

It seems right to me. The rule of multiplying exponents of the same base is that (a^b)(a^c) = a^(b+c). So the determinant here is:
(-5e^(3t))(3e^(4t)) - (-6e^(3t))(-4e^(4t)) =
-15e^(3t)e^(4t)) - 24e^(3t)e^(4t) =
-15e^(7t) - 24e^(7t) = -39e^(7t)

-6e^3t * -4e^4t = 24e^7t

-15e^7t - 24e^7t = -39e^7t

i get the same as you. to me it looks right.

Your answer, -39e^(7t) is correct!
Let's do it bit by bit:
ad = -15e^(3t+4t) = -15e^(7t)
bc = 24e^(7t)
ad -bc = -39e^(7t).
