Hi everyone. I am a 24 year old who has had my period now for 7 weeks. I do not have insurance so am not sure what to do as far as seeing a doctor. In the meantime, I am looking for any help :) Here are some random factors that might help as far as background information:
I have not been sexually active for about a year but have had the same boyfriend for four years, I have never been on any type of birth control, I have gained some weight in the past year. I have longer periods that most usually about 4-7 days but never longer then a week. My period has been going on for 7 weeks now. It goes back & forth between heavy and light.

I completely understand I need to see a doctor-that's a given.
My question is---what could be the cause of this?

Sethsgirl- Dizzy-no. More thirsty then usual-no. Fatigued---I would say yes.

Owllady- How could this affect pregnancy in the future?

Thanks for all of the helpful advice so far :)

Thank you everyone for the helpful advice. I am going to look into getting insurance tomorrow. I live in the north Chicago suburbs & I'm sure there are clinics around here. I have never bought my own insurance so I think I just need to look into getting that.

Is there anything I can do in the next couple of days that would help a bit? Iron supplements? Red meat?

You should call a free health hot-line or something in order to get some information and advice because 7 weeks of having a period is not normal, and you could very possibly have a problem with you kidneys!!! Please call some one immediately!

Depends on what is going on with your lifestyle right now. Stress will cause periods to either be absent or continue for a prolonged period. Weight gain will also make periods be unusual because of the extra hormone estrogen that is secreted from fat as you gain weight. Normally the body secretes estrongen when it becomes pregnant telling the uterus not to shed the uterine wall because the fertilized egg will be implanted there. If the body is not pregnant then the uterine wall sheds every month and this is the normal period. So your body may be confused as to what is going on depending on how much weight you have gained. Planned Parenthood might be a good place to start or the clinic associated with your college or university if that is an option.

Sweetie if you have been bleeding for 7 weeks you need to see a doctor.. I understand you don't have insurance but you can still go to the ER. This could be nothing at all but it could also be very serious. I am curious if you are having any other side effect.. such as are you tired or feel light headed? Thirsty all the time, Dizzy? These can be serious signs of problems.. I don't mean to scare you but you do need to see a doctor.. I hope this helps you out some..

There are a number of things that can cause it. Weight gain and menstrual changes could be associated with a low thyroid level. This can be checked by a blood test. You may also need to be checked for anemia if you've been bleeding that long or you may want to consider an iron supplement. There is a very informative article at http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/menorrhagia/DS00394/DSECTION=1

If you can't afford to see a doctor check to see if any of the following are available in your area:
Public Health Department
Family Planning Clinic
Free Clinic

It sounds like you could use a D&C. Which means dilatation and curatage of your uterus. I wouldn't fool around with this. You could become enemic and eventually ruin yourself for future pregnancys. Please do not put off going to your local clinic. They usually have a sliding scale, if you are worried about the cost. You can't put a price on your health. Good luck and please see a doctor.

You might be having a severe case of internal bleeding. This can be caused by a rip or puncture in your uterus. If you are taking any other medications, stop and call a pharamcist.

Good Luck!

Go to Planned Parenthood, they are good with no insurance.
I had a period for 29 years and never was regular, this can be something easily as hormone therapy.
