Prior to your surgery whether you are admitted the night before or the day before, they will shave the area that is to be operated on. . . hair can not be sterilized when they scrub the area to be operated on.
You will most likely be given what they call a pre-op shot unless you request to not have one. . . this shot will help to relieve your anxiety.
You will have an IV started either in an area just out of the OR or maybe even in the OR. This is how they will give you the medicine to put you to sleep.
You will most likely get an oxygen mask until you are asleep and then they will probably put a breathing tube down your throat if you are to be asleep for over 30minutes. . .precaution measure.
The surgery will take place and when you wake up,you will be in the Recovery Room with your bandages on your surgery site.
The nurses in the Recovery Room will monitor your breathing, your heart beat, check your dressing and be there for you until you are reasonbly awake.
They will be the ones to give you your first pain med if one is called for.
When they think you are awake enough and doing okay, they will see you to your hospital room where you will stay until you go home.
