My wife noticed that our (almost 1 year old) gas dryer has a flame within that is visible in some creases in the frame with the lights out. We're affraid it might be a fire hazard but opening the door and closing it stops the flame, which leads us to believe it may be normal. Our is a new model gas Frigidaire FGQ1442E , http://www.frigidaire.com/products/laundry/dryers/gas/prod_FGQ1442E.asp

New gas dryers (like yours) do not have pilot lights. They have electric spark generators or glow plugs. The glow plugs are seen when the unit first goes on.
Do not worry, it is working as it should.

A one year old dryer would not have a pilot light on it.It will have a hot surface igniter on it.There hasn't be a gas dryer built in the U.S. in many years that has a pilot light on it.You have a hazardous problem that will only get worse until it is fixed. What is happening is the gas valve is not completely closing when the dryer shuts down. This leaves a small stream of gas flowing from the valve that remains lit. This is not a strong flame and when you open and close the door it moves enough air to blow out the flame. The gas valve cannot be fixed and will need to be replaced. Please get this fixed soon as it may start to leak more and could cause a much larger problem in the future.I have many years experiance with a major gas supplier and during installation testing I have seen this often.

yes gas dryers has pilot lights. in fact keep your lint clean, do not let it get overloaded with lint. Can be a fire hazard if left uncleaned. I worked at a home where the dryer did in fact catch fire all because of some lint that had fallen in back of the dryer and accumulated over the months.

most dryers now a days don't have pilot lights but electronic ignition on them but if you go to their web site that you gave and go to custoner service they will be able to answer this for you and can tell you if you need to fix or replace this item or if this is OK for the dryer.

Gas driers do have pilots, some may have the pilotless ignition on them. You're all right.
