His/her stances and plans are important, but I think that character, intelligence, and leadership are the deciding factors for me. The Deciders if you will.

Character: Don't be a douche. Don't be too negative, too partisan, and don't be dishonest. Basically try not to be a politician.

Intelligence: simple. If they do stupid things, say stupid things, or suggest stupid things they are out. Stupid things are ones that are not very well thought through. Like universal health care, more taxes for the rich, and pulling out of Iraq are all stupid things in my eyes. You may be saying "but those are all good!", but you aren't really thinking them through to the conclusion if that's what you think. You're just being stupid. No Presidency for you.

Leadership: What are YOU going to do? Don't sit there and tell me how badly the other guy screwed up, or how bad his ideas are. The only way I will vote for you is if you convince me that your ideas are good, not that his are bad. I want to see you take charge of your own campaign, I want to see your party rally behind you, and I want to see you convert some of the other party's voters, and do it all without thinking you've already won. Be competitive. You're applying for a job, and I want to know that you want to actually do the job instead of just enjoy the fact that you were hired and the other guy wasn't.

Their past activities, jobs. What the person's statements and activities indicate about their personal philosophy. Have they supported the basic tenets of our Constitution and Bill of Rights? Do they understand the importance of our history, the way our financial and business sector works, who our friends and enemies are in the greater world community and are they beholden to any special interest group.
Are they running because they want the power and prestige or because they have a vision of a strong and safe America. Do they love their country and what it stands for or are they out to change our way of life.
In other words, who are you, what have you done in the past, where do you want to lead us and do you really love this wonderful country.

I look at their morals first. This isn't to say that I would pick someone with the same morals as I do (without any governmental skills) over one that has some different morals (but has proved themselves with past experiences).

How believable his lies are, if he's just mediocre when it comes to telling me what I want to hear without convincing me, he's just not good enough.
