Okay according to Hagrid in the book thestrals (the big winged horse like things that pull the carriages up to the school) can only be seen by someone who has seen death. All of a sudden in his fifth year Harry can suddenly see them, because he saw Cedric die last year. Why hasn't he been able to see them all along? He saw his mother die when he was a baby.

We know Jo herself has said that Harry didn't see his mother die, so that's why he couldn't see the thestrals before. But I've had a nagging question since re-read number four: Why didn't he see them during the return trip in fourth year? He had already seen Cedric die.

Harry couldn't see the Thestrals before his fourth year because he didn't actually see his parents die; he was in his crib at the time and all he saw was a flash of green light. But he did see Cedric die right before his eyes, and J.K. Rowling has said that you can only see the Thestrals when the death "sinks in".

JKR did not actually come out and say infant Harry SAW her die. In the dementor scenes, he re-HEARD his parents death everytime he was attacked. But he had no visual memory of the event (thankfully). He was present in the house- but did not see it.
Now that he has seen Cedric die, he can see the thestrals.

Well according to J.K Rowling, he actually did not see his mother die, because as u know he was only one and in his bed. So voldemort killed Lily, and then tried to kill him while he was in his crib. So technically the first death he "saw" was Cedric.

JK Rowling answered this question on her site. She said Harry didn't actually see his parents die. Since he was only a baby, he was in his cot and all he saw was a flash of green light.

It has been answered by JKR, IIRC, that this was the first time he saw someone die and could remember it. He was too young to understand what he may or may not have seen at his mother's death, and blacked out before Querrel (sic) died in PS/SS.

He didn't ACTUALLY see his mother die. She put infant Harry in his crib before Voldemort A-K'd her. All baby Harry saw was the flash of green light when Lily died.
