I work at a hotel. People take things for one reason: because they are thieves. Complimentary items like soap, shampoo, and lotions are supposed to be taken, and are figured into the price of the room. However, everyone knows that linens, towels, pillows, televisions, and accessories are being rented to them, not given. We have had bedspreads, mirrors, and furniture taken from our hotel, and these rascals know full well that they are stealing. Some hotels offer to sell towels, robes, and other items to their guests, but they always give a price list for those items. Sometimes, it is purely accidental that a guest will take a towel home with them, and we sure wouldn't charge a guest for a towel or wash cloth that was inadvertantly placed with dirty clothes and taken home, but if you take a whole set of towels, do not be surprised if your credit card is charged for them.
Yes, hotels will "chase" people who steal from them. Most hotels ask for a credit card to reserve your room, and if you steal from the hotel, they will charge you for those items. Some hotels ask for room deposits for those who pay cash, because there is a greater risk of theft from people who know you cannot track them with a credit card.

Cos they think that it comes with the price of the hotel stay, and cos they can. No, they don't chase people, that's silly and not cost effective. I mean, if they can afford a hotel stay, they obviously don't need to steal, so the risk is not high, although it still occurs. Enough revenue comes in, they write off the losses as the thefts that they are from the taxes on the revenue. Don't worry, they know what they're doing. Besides, if you want to go ahead and steal towels and linens, go ahead, but know that someone else used them before you did and their nasty germs are all over them. Enjoy.

i never do it. people dont think about how many ppl have used those towels, pillows, robes, before them. i worked at a hotel and i know ppl do it, but not that often. most ppl have more sense.
our hotel doesnt monitor it but some hotels make u leave a credit card on file and when stuff comes up missing in the room they charge you for it. our hotel had like 300 rooms but only ordered towels/linens and stuff once a yr. if EVERYbody was stealing they would have to order a lot more than that.
my advice: dont do it its dirty! (feel free to take the soaps and shampoos tho we give those away..)

I think it's because they think they're getting something for free. What they don't realise is the more people steal from hotels. the higher the price of the hotel eventually becomes in order to compensate for the loss.
Even so , I'ma fiend for stealing towels! They're lovely and soft from hotels!

Well, just the little soaps, but as I asked for them at the front desk, I don't think that counts. Other than that, no. I have enough towels at home. The last thing I need is a pile of boring white towels in the laundry.
