They probably have to sign a contract agreeing to present themselves in a certain fashion, including singing after being voted off the show.

I think the hardest thing to do would be to sing but they all seem to do it. If they started to say what they want to they would just be cut off. The one girl who sang scat music and was voted off made a comment that the world isn't ready for scat music at the end of her final song and they cut her right off.

Well, they probably don't have a choice, I'm sure. But if I happened to be on there and had a choice, I'd just be like Forget this...I'm going to be with my family.
But then...my chances of actually being on American Idol are slim to none :)

sure i would stay and sing the top 10 usually end up with some kinda recording contract any how so there not really losing
