I am doing a paper on this subject in my english class. I have a lot of information about the profits the US government would make by taxing marijuana (somewhere around 14 billion dollars) and i was wondering how the public felt. Should we take jail time off of posession? This would make it fall into the same category say as alcohol. And please dont just give me answers about how bad it is if you dont know anything about it. thanks.

Prior to laws making drugs of any sort illegal, there was no significant drug problem in the USA. When peer pressure causes someone to experiment with drugs, they are dealing with the black market and pressure is applied to move from safe drugs such as marijuana to harsher (and more profitable) drugs. In addition, illegal drugs were made more potent to make them easier to smuggle and conceal. The root cause of these problems is their being illegal. End the drug prohibition and just like the alcohol prohibition, any latent problems will be manageable. The parallels are truly amazing.

There are far too many uses for this drug to be considered illegal. It doesn't have to be processed it can be sold in its natural form. Cancer patients ,glaucoma , muscle relaxer or an alternative to a glass of wine or a beer after work to unwind.
A college study found the affects in behavior on these two drugs pot and alcohol were. Pot= cautious, polite, passive. Alcohol= reckless, rude, aggressive. This is one example but there are many others ,motor skills and problem solving which all showed pot to be more beneficial and a safer recreational drug. So why again If pot is illegal isn't alcohol? hmm hypocrisy, possibly. It is all political, one section of government I wont mention lets just say the initials are cia make money off the distribution of illegal drugs and the local government police make the money off the busts with court fines and jail time. Ok I'm done, I get sick every time i think about it .

I think you have a good point. Especially now that alcohol and tobacco have proved to be more harmful to the human body than marijuana is. There should be no jail time for possession because it is a non-violent crime. Only community service at best. Americans should have the freedom to "use" marijuana as long as it does not hurt anyone else.

I have thought marijuana should be made legal for years. It's less damaging that alcohol and I think that the revenue from it's taxation should be reason enough. Plenty of other things to worry about such as cocaine, meth, etc.
