I wouldn't try saltwater in a 5 gallon, leave that to the true saltwater experts.
As far as freshwater fish, my first vote would go to killifish, fro there you could check out sparkling gourami, dwarf gourami, croaking gourami, tons of bettas other than the regular betta splendens, several different apistogrammas would work... loads of choices. The links above are the best places on the net for killifish, here's one for apistogramma:

and one where you can find out about and even by the gourami and other bettas I mentioned

Hope that helps.

a five gallon tank is way too small for saltwater - the minimal size tank recommended for saltwater is at least 20 gallons. With a 5 gallon tank, you are limited to the kind of fish you can get - rule of thumb is 1 gallon of water for 1" of fish and remember that the gravel and any ornaments will take away from that 5 gallons, you may wind up with only 3-4 gallons of water. With that in mind, guppies, some mollys and some tetras will do fine in that size tank...mollys and tetras are schooling fish so you should get at least 3 of each species so maybe 3-4 neons or mollys would be great. Goldfish, being a "thicker" fish require 5 gallons of water per inch and they can grow quite large so a 5 gallon tank will do fine for a little while with one goldie, but you will soon have to upgrade to a larger tank as he grows.

A 5 gallon salt water aquarium would be very difficult to keep. It's easier to keep the salt levels steady in larger amounts of water.
Leopard and Zebra danios are beautiful and will do well in close quarters.
Each goldfish needs at least 10 gallons all to itself and they don't mix well with tropical fish. They make too much waste, and need the water to be too cold for tropical fish to be comfortable.
Hope this helps

if you want more fish you will be best getting something like 10 gallons. you cant add anything else to a 2.5 gallon tank, and the only other thing you can really add to a 5 gallon tank is a shrimp or 2

that's too small for a goldfish, and too small for a beginner salt water tank. that would be an awesome home for a betta, just add a heater and put something in front of the filter intake tube so his fins don't get caught. You could also divide it and get two bettas, one for each side. I use that plastic grid type thing that little kids weave yarn through and make coasters or whatever, I buy it in the craft department at walmart. I hope you know what I mean.

You might want to try some killifish. They are small, can be quite colorful and will do well in a small tank.
