Do you tip based on how good the service was? How good the food was? Do you deduct points if something is not just right? Do you always tip the same amount? Do you just base it on a standard percentage or are there factors that can influence that? Or do you feel sorry for the poor servers who are working so hard for just $2.13 an hour?

Gumbo: It is the United States that pays servers only $2.13 an hour. It is not even close to minimum wage here either but they expect we will get tipped to minimum wage. This is not always the case. Some days I can work an 8 hour shift and go home with only $15 or $20. Several states (I think CA and WA are two of them) pay their servers a "living wage" of about $5 or $6 per hour plus tips.

I base it on the service my waiter/waitress provides. I will take into consideration how busy the restaurant is, and will even forgive a little bit of sloppy service if I feel my server is doing their best. Everyone has an off day....Basing it on how good the food is would be punishing the server for what the chef did.

I think a 10% tip is appropriate and I have been in the restaurant/bar industry for 6 years. Some of the things were slightly understandable if she was busy, but all those small things add up and can ruin a group's meal. I also agree that giving a small tip is better and more noted to the server then not giving a tip at all. They typically realize they did something wrong with a small tip as opposed to just ignore a zero tip. Since 20% is the new generally accepted amount to give servers, 10% says hey you tried but you didn't do well.

I understand that they don't make that much money, but my tips are based on two things:
1> Good service.
2> How much money I have.

It is not custom to tip Australia but I Still do if the the Waiter had exceptional customer service.
It is that that makes me want to tip not necessarily the food.
If the food id disgusting i would be saying something about it though
