I'm trying to load thread onto the bobbin - it won't move - neither does the spool of thread I am trying to load it from. I just bought this machine used - it did not come with a manual. Does anyone know where I can get a free manual?

You can also take it to a repair person or a shop who will show you how to use it. It sounds like you need to release the clutch so the bobbin will wind. Usually that's done by turning the flywheel, the big wheel on the right side of the machine, towards you. Or the wheel might have a hub that turns toward you. Very old machines have a tab that ytou press with your thumb to release the clutch.

Then you have to remember to re-engage the clutch to start sewing again.

try singer sewing machines .com
it sounds like u didn't unlock the wheel
picture this... on ur left as u r facing the machine is a wheel inside that wheel should b another wheel or knob. this is usually used to unlock the other wheel so that the bobbin gets the tension to turn and fill
i,m not sure if i explained myself properly but i hope u understand what i am saying
good luck

go to singer company on line and ask for the manual, if they have one on line you are good, otherwise you may have to order one, if the presser foot is down the thread wont move easily, lift the presserfoot, see if that makes a difference, is the thread tangled anywhere? is anything rusted?
