In "Never Cry Wolf"...why did Tyler did his experiment on eating mice?

Tyler reluctantly took the assignment of going up, and researching why the caribou population was deminishing; it was suspected that the wolves in the area was hunting down and killing the caribou. After conducting studies over a particular family of wolves, Tyler observed that the wolves appeared quite healthy, but their diet had nothing to do with caribou. Apparently, the wolves were devouring the multitude of field mice in the area. To test the theory that the wolves were able to sustain themselves on mice, Tyler decided to conduct an experiment, and conduct his own diet in a similar manner (an ironic notion, as well as an amusing scene, considering that 'Never Cry Wolf' was produced by the folks over at Disney....the home of the one, the only Mickey Mouse!!!).

Because he was studying them and try to work out their lifestyle he did it to see if the wolves could live on such a diet of just mice.
