U.S. involvement was not inevitable in Vietnam. In fact, the U.S. could have avoided being more involved on a few occasions, let alone end the war at will and at any time between 1965 and 1973.

The first time that the U.S. could have avoided a conflict in Vietnam was by not assisting the French during the French-Indochina War. There is a good possibility that Ho Chi Minh would have been friendly to the U.S. because we had helped him (and saved his life) during WWII. We were allies with the French during WWII, and apparently had an obligation to help them retake their colonies, which the French broke their promise to liberate.

In my opinion, the moment that dramatically changed U.S. involvement in Vietnam was when Kennedy was assassinated. Vietnam could be much like Korea is today, South Vietnam could be a powerful global economy and millions of people may not have died because of the Vietnam War if Kennedy was not assassinated.

Ironically, the Tet Offense could have been an opportunity to end the Vietnam War very quickly. The Viet Cong was destroyed and the NVA was so devastated that it would take months for them to recover back to a formidable fighting force after the Tet Offense. The South Vietnamese military could have marched to Hanoi and take over North Vietnam with little resistance shortly after the Tet Offense.

Read the book "Vietnam a History" by Stanley Karnow. It's the best explanation of the history of Vietnam and our involvement in
that war. Nothing is inevitable.
