This country has never, never recovered from the debacle in Vietnam. The pain just never goes away. It's the gift that keeps on giving.

The latest form of Vietnam pain is the slogan "support the troops," which sounds more like an incantation than an idea. No sane citizen wouldn't support the troops, but the mantra has political power, so it is used ad nauseum in an effort to control popular thought and gain further acceptance for the war. Not to mention the attempt to gain unlimited funding.

We don't need this war. It is not working in our favor at any level. It is killing our boys. It is draining our coffers. It is offering terrorists a rallying point which did not exist before, and increasing the numbers of terrorists exponentially.

Democrats support the troops more, by wanting them to live.

EDIT: This may be the first time in history that "supporting the troops" was equated with sending them to a hellhole to fry in the desert and/or have their nuts shot off. I am AMAZED by that.

That's a hard question to answer. I don't even know if there is a correct answer. At least since 9/11 I think our troops have been used basically for monetary and political gain by both sides of the government. I mean our troops are sent to Iraq originally b/c Iraq had "WMD". It was a year and a half after 9/11, so of course the country gets behind the war. But surprise there are no WMD. Then we go after Saddam, which granted he needed to be gotten rid of, but what about Osama? Where is he? Saddam wasn't behind 9/11. So now its been four years, we are pouring billions of dollars into rebuilding Iraq, thousands of troops into protecting and training Iraq and yet no vengeance for 9/11 has been had, we still have not found any weapons of mass destruction and Osama is still on the loose.

OK, sorry that turned into a bit of a rant. I know non of that is relevant to your question. I think now the democrats are starting to support our troops a little more. They want to bring them home from this mess. I know they are refusing to give them more money right now, but its all they have to get Bush to change his mind. They won't hold out forever.

It really depends. The Republicans obviously are running our military into the ground and just today announced that all active duty army soldiers will now be serving 15 month tours as opposed to the standard 12. My husband and my little brother, both soldiers, are pissed. On the other hand, the democrats routinely shoot down pay increases for our military members. So, I would say that none of our politicians support the troops right now. Republicans and democrats alike see them as pawns in some game they're playing on capitol hill.

As for individual people who belong to the different parties, it's almost impossible to answer. Both republicans and democrats serve in our military. Waiting at home for them and sending them care packages are family members whose political spectrums run the gamete.

"Support the Troops" really has turned into such a bullsh*t phrase, though. Most people say it without really thinking about what it means.

I'm a former independent, now a democrat for the rest of my life ... thanks Rush for opening my eyes.

I want to say the Democrats support our troops more, but I can't ... I think both parties fully support the troops ... they just do it from different perspectives and in different ways.

I don't think one party does over the other. It depends on the point of view.
One party supports them by trying to give them everything they need to stay, fight and win so America regains it's worldwide respect (not the only reason of course).
The other party seems to not understand what a military is for and that when you need to utilize that military, troops will be lost so they support the troops by trying avoid the use of the military. There's a question...
Will the Dems eliminate the US military forces since military action results in troops losing their lives?

"Support The Troops" is a fckuing advertising slogan.

Americans, all of us, support the troops, what some of us do not support is keeping them in harms way in a war that never should have happened in the first place.

Bring the troops home, alive and uninjured.

It depends on how you view the troops. If you view them as victims of the government, then you want to protect them from the government, and bring them home.

If you view the troops as individuals who chose to be employed in the service of their nation, you want to keep them employed.

As a Conservative, I subscribe to the latter view. I believe Republicans support the troops more, because Republicans want to keep them employed in their chosen job, as protectors of their nation.
