Between 40 and 50 amps alone for the AC.Check on the AC unit for min amps.Usually a 100 amp breaker panel will be just fine for a apartment that needs a few lights. You will have enough places in the panel to add enough breakers to separate the load through out the apartment.Be safe!!!!!

You don't mention if the apt. has it's own electrical service or is sub-fed from a house or other service.

If it is wired for 50 amps, 50 amps must be enough. Single-phase A/C 'rule of thumb' is 10 amps per ton. That's your largest load. Lights and receptacles are diddly. Microwave would bring it up, but for a short time, same for fridge. Furnace fan, intermittent use, 10 amps or so.

I'd still upgrade to 100 amp.

Is this the service entrance panel (outside box) or sub-panel (inside box)The AC pulls about 30A and your leftovever 20A should be plenty for lighting but save yourself money now and put in at least a 100A for future upgrades. If you think you might install a heat pump in the future install a 200A service. Also you need to check with the local city inspector and certified electrician. Some inspectors require you to have at least a 100A service. If this is an inside sub-panel you are talking about, a 50A should suffice.

Upgrade to at least 100 amp 150 would be better.
Consult a licensed reputable electrician.
Good luck!!

If your going to change out the panel, go to 100 amp... this will allow for expansion, without headaches in the future
