incorrect, any penalty called in the first period of a game would continue into the second period should the first period end prior to the penalty expiring or a power play goal being scored, in the event of a penalty after the 18 minute mark of the 3rd period, should the game end in regulation the penalty does NOT carry over into the next game, if the game goes into overtime (playoffs) the penalty would carry over into OT as the playoffs are sudden death 5 on 5 with a 20 minute clock as is a regulation period.

Minor penalties - high sticking, cross checking, two minutes in the penalty box, no. Major penalties such as fighting, bench-clearing brawls, drawing blood, causing multiple head injuries, roughing the referee, etc, can result in game suspensions. Sometimes players are benched for whole periods for penalties incurred in the previous game, but that is sometimes left to the coach's discretion and not a demand or ruling by the referee. But for each playoff game they start each game with zero score and zero penalties every time, honoring only game suspensions or players benched due to gross misconduct.

Penalties at the end of games in the playoffs are the same as in regular season games: they last until the other team scores, the penalty expires or the game ends. Everyone starts on even footing in the next game.

He is indeed wrong.
By the way, misconductions and suspensions can carry over, but the slate is cleaned at the start of the playoffs. Say a player gets a certain number of game misconducts (three?) in postseason, he automatically sits for the next game. Another misconduct, a longer suspension. But if he had some misconducts in the regular season, they don't affect his status in the playoffs.

I agree with everyone else. The only thing that would ever carry over into the next game would be if the player got suspended. Just like in the regular season.
Your friend either doesn't know which end of the hockey stick is up, or he is messing with you.

Definitely not. That's funny though. A player could be suspended for a game(s) if they do something really bad, but no, penalties won't carry over.
