I keep both tarantulas and scorpions. I currently have about 50 tarantulas(but who's counting?)and seven scorpions. I also have several native "true" spiders that I keep around the house for insect control, and two big female Black Crevice Spiders(Kukulcania hibernalis)that are my classroom pets at school. Arachnids might not be affectionate pets, but they're easy to care for and are quite interesting.

My 17 year old daughter has a Rose Hair tarantula and a lavender albino California king snake. She handles each of the (not at same time). She also has 2 Syrian hamsters, a rabbit, 2 rats, 4 mice and is getting 1 jumbo rat this weekend.

I used to have a scorpion. It was a very big black one that I bought at a pet store. It was very docile. It had a big bag of venom on its tail, but never ever used it. I it got a little upset, it would pinch. It never got very upset. It ate crickets. It didn't sting those either. It just picked them up with its pinchers and started eating. It was a pleasant enough companion. I have found that scorpions and Madagascar hissing cockroaches can tell one person from another (by scent I think), and are more nervous with a stranger.
