Well Hitler started the systematic killing of gays, jews and gypsies and other minority groups within Germany in 1933, but the stage of the Holocaust that most people are familiar with started in 1939, when Jews were sent to concentration camps, gased and then burned.

The so-called Wansee Conference was the start of high volume, state-sponsored extermination of european jewry. The number of deaths prior to that date do not compare in scale and inhumanity as that carried out after Jan '42, what's commonly referred to as the HOLOCAUST..
