ok... good grief at the answers.... you only have a few days until the weekend so it's not a major deal here. First step, stop feeding them. Second step, do a big water change, like 1/2 the tank. If you plan to buy the same brand filter to go back on the tank, rinse you filter pad in the old tank water and put in in the tank with the fish. This will save the bacteria you need for the ammonia control until you get your new filter.

DO NOT move them out of their tank! They need the bacteria in the tank to keep the ammonia down some. Moving them to a clean container will only make things worse for them.

Don't feed them until you get your new filter. Fish can go days and days without food and the less food, the less waste. Change 25% or so of the water each day until you get your new filter and all will be well.

It's not as bad as it seems, it's just a matter of keeping the ammonia out of the tank for a few days.

Hope that helps and best of luck! If I can help more just drop me an email.

Quickly switch them over into a big glass bowl with water that has been treated with a de-chlorinating chemical like AmQuel. AmQuel will also get rid of other undesirable chemicals (including ammonia) in the tab water. Make certain the new temp is close to, if not the same, as the temp that the fish were just in. Put an aerator pump in the bowl, the motorized kind with the hose and air stone. Cover the bowl with an inverted platter because big goldfish are "jumpers". This will rescue the fish until you can figure out what is wrong with the filter. Then, maybe tomorrow, go shopping for a good-size fish bowl or, better yet, a five gallon aquarium just for the goldfish--one with a filter/aerator would be best.

You're right, goldfish should not be tanked with tropicals - tropicals are warm water fish while goldfish require colder temps. Your goldfish will live in warmer water, but they are famous for bacterial diseases and warm water breeds bacteria...no surprise that your danios and tetras have died. Anyway, if all your tropicals have died, then leave the goldfish in the tank and don't put any more tropicals in there. Your goldfish don't need filtration, though having a filter saves you from having to clean the tank often. They do however need aeration, so if you have an air pump and air stones thats all you really need for the goldfish. If you still have some tropicals - they need filtration so I suggest you get a new filter as soon as possible and maybe a second tank to house your goldies.

Goldfish dont belong in a community tank because of the ammonia they produce. Why dont you pick up a smaller tank to house just the 2 goldfish. That way you can change the water in the goldfish tank more often. All the fish will be happier that way.

I'd go ahead and get rid of the goldfish, put a heater in at 80 degrees and all the other fish should be fine... Neons die easier than most fish though... Either way, get a new filter ;)

Buy a new filter!
Until then put them into a seperate bowl.
But,if one dies and you find it within 2-4 hrs of it's death, squish some frozen peas (about 3) and put them in. I know it sounds weird, but my friend heard it somewhere, and it worked! Her fish came back to life! Hey, it's worth a try...
