For those who live there or have spent a decent amount of time there. What was your impression. I just got accepted to a study abroad program at AIU for the Fall. What's some cool stuff to look forward to?

I stayed in Akita for some years studying at Akita University. Akita is still considered an "inaka", a rural area in northern Japan. It is famous for its delicious "sake" . Akita "kome" (tasty rice) and "Akita bijin" (beautiful girls). AIU is still a bit separated from the city so expect a bit more rural setting at that site.

Akita is also known to have a harsh winter considering that area experiences some of the heaviest snowfall in Japan. Skiing is well-known past time during the winter though. You can't consider yourself to have lived in Akita if you haven't tried skiing there. They also have some nice "onsens " (hot springs).

Nature is pretty much alive in Akita. There are numerous places to go for cherry-blossom viewing, summer festivals are all over the place including the nationwide renowned Kanto festival, it has some of the best places in the country for viewing the autumn changing of leaves and there are still festivities and things to do on winter.

They have a sister-city relationship with Minnesota. Foreigners are not that many though, you'll probably get to know each one of them during your stay there since the total population of Akita is also not that big.

Overall, they say that you'll probably know Akita inside-out in a year's time but in keeping an open mind it's still possible to enjoy many years of stay there. Email me if you have further questions like where to look for apartments and other stuff and I really hope you'll enjoy your stay there.

Skiing/snowboarding season has just ended. If you bring your snowboard, you'll probably gonna use it sometime late November or early December.

Hi roww1e. Just watching on-line now and Akita is claimed to have an extended iciness and a brief summer season. It turns out to have the lovely conventional tranquility of 'truly japan' that such a lot of folks appear for. I recognize you'll have a first-rate time. I am going again to Japan in two weeks and possibly I will see you there!

You should check out the Oga peninsula, Kisakata and other coastal areas. They have a culture all their own on Oga. The annual snowfall in Akita city itself is not too bad, at least compared to some cities in Japan like Nagaoaka or Yonezawa that really get buried. Up in the moutains though, it gets really deep. Akita folks are alway anxious about bears when hiking etc.(I'd be more concerned about boar, myself)., but you never really hear of serious injuries caused by Japanese bears. Often the aftermath of human-bear encounter is bear stew. In any case they have a good supply of benign creatures like tanuki and kamoshika as well. Tanuki are shy, but kamoshika are just out there going about the kamoshika business and don't seem particulalry perturbed by humans. I came around the bend in a trail once and a kamoshika browsing along the edge of the trail had a good look at me before it ambled back into the underbrush.
