I also would recommend The Stand to start. I have read all of his books, but this one is my favorite. Also, the movie is probably the closest to the book. I would suggest reading the book first and then renting the movie. Or it shows up on the SciFi channel often.
The Shining is great. Four Seasons is fantastic. It is also very good. Cell, the most recent is also fairly good.
Enjoy. I would stay away from the Dark Tower series until you read all of the others.

Start with The Stand then It, Eyes of the Dragon, The Talisman...you'll start seeing a connection between these books. Save the Dark Tower Series until the end b/c this series connects most of his books together.

Read 'Salems Lot. I read it only after midnight. Scared the *hit out of me.
Don't bother with the movies made from his books. They do the books no justice. The only good Stephen King movie is The Stand.

Carie, Cujo, Thinner, Cats Eyes. All good and easy readers. For a little more depth try The Langoleers or The Shining.

Just get the first one that you come across. They are all wonderful. My first Stephen King was The Stand. That's when I fell in love with King's novels. Carrie, was his first novel.

I think it is best to start with "Dark Tower" related books because so much of what he has done directly relates to his epic masterpiece. I recommend "The Gunslinger" (get the new revised version) and the try "Insomnia".

When Stephen King first tried to write a book he struggled with it. Finally, in frustration he tossed it in the trash can. His wife retrieved it and made him refine and rewrite it. That book? "Carrie".....I recommend you start here.

Start with the earlier ones. Carrie would be a good start. In his later books he started to insert references to other books and stories. By starting with the earlier one you can enjoy them more. Don't forget his short stories.

you should start with his first book Carrie (1974) and go from there. that way you can see how he grows into the writer he is today. no one is better than he is in this genre of fiction.
