I am a nanny to a 6 yr old boy. We go to the library once a week and check out books and dvds. From time to time, we have found these items under the couch and other places when it is time to return them to the library. Not long ago, a dvd was late and it cost them $6. Now, there is a dvd missing and the limit for late fee has been reached....$10. This family is VERY generous to me. However, after our conversation, there was a bit hemming and hawing about this matter. I wasn't TOLD to pay it, but it was not a comfortable phone conversation. We have set up a plan for the future, which I will try to follow...but mind you...I do not live with them. I have only a modicum of control.
Was this MY resposibility? Am I missing something here? Sure, upon hearing the tone in the dad's voice, I could have coughed up the money.1st off, I do NOT think it is my responsibility but also , I am going through a very bad time at present, money wise. Let me say, they are very well off.
What do U think?

If this family is "very generous" to you, then don't lose your job making a "Sunshine's Last Stand" over it. Maybe you should not borrow dvds from the library, since they have the larger fines; or, tell them that you prefer that they give you one of their library cards to check out stuff with: this way, any overdue fines will be on them, and they will know this, and take better care to keep an eye on library materials borrowed on their card.

I don't know how many hours a day you are there. The child belongs to the couple. They should have a special place for the child to keep books and DVDs, so that he knows exactly where to put them after he finishes with them after each use.
I would not pay for it. They made the choice not to be there to care for him, 24/7.Why would his loosing that DVD be your fault. Heck it could be in his toy box.

Sunshine...1st hello...and now to the Q.
I do not believe you can be the one responsible...if you are in their home..they should know where the dvd is..or should have a place for you to put them...the same spot everytime. But also I must say when my daughter was 6..she knew to put her things where they belonged, when she was done. They may want to teach this to their child. But if you feel real uneasy, how about for just this time..you offer to pay half.
Ciao

WHAT the luuny tinks is... if you are the nanny, then you are the one that instills in this kid almost everything...good and bad. If you just let him toss stuff everywhere, and don't hold him accountable for these things, then HE IS TO BLAME. Forget time out, make him work to pay it off. That has GOT to be a hard position, being part time mom cuz what? mom would rather work and pay a Nanny? CRIKY! I wanna nanny like YOU!

nope...its their responsibility....its their house, and their kid.
if the kid came to YOUR house, it would be on you, but since its at their house...and they KNOW you guys go every week, you would think they would try to keep track of the stuff (books, etc.).........keep them in a certain place, round them up the day b4 u guys go...things like that

my friend is a nanny for a 1 year old, and the family also has plenty of money for all of us...and they expect my friend to do EVERYTHING for them....they even have her grocery shop (just for the baby) and buy his diapers.....i mean, if they dont have diapers over the weekend, they use the night time ones and wait for my friend to get there on monday. i think thats a little silly.

You are hired, and the child belongs to the family. If it's HIS DVD, the family should pay.
