The same thing that happened to your first sentence, which is, in fact, a question without a question mark, I might add. It is embarrassing to read.

Grammar and spelling requires actually learning how a sentence is written, with subjects, adverbs, adjectives, and so forth. Teachers, for the most part, are trying their best to teach how these "sentence things" work; but if students don't pay attention to the teacher and have parents that care enough to follow through with the checking of homework, it's vertually impossible to teach correct grammer and correct sentences. Teachers can only do so much and then the parents have got to care enough that their child learn to SPEAK and write correctly. So many young people slur their words or worse yet, talk trash and slang. I'm not saying that trash and slang have no place in language, but I AM saying it has no place in classrooms, nor their homes. It's useage is only for groups of young people that understand their way of talking and are out having fun. But if they can't leave their slang out of the classroom, what can the teacher do? If we messed up when I was in school, about a thousand years ago, we were punished>> by the teacher and then again by our parents because we had to give a "note from the teacher to our parents." I understand that there are a lot of single parents struggling to do what is right for their children, but sometimes the parent is too exhausted because they have to work two or three jobs. That's when the child could help their parent by completing their homework and have it ready for the parent to check and once in a while, instead of buying that hot DVD, they could buy the parent a small bouquet of flowers. I know I haven't made even a small dent in this poor grammar thing, but if anyone would care to write essays, I would be more than willing to correct it for them. My double majors in college were english and Criminal Justice......... and if you think that the word english should be capitalized, look it up. Janet....... jwatson9885@yahoo.com

Many reasons for improper spelling and grammar usage exist, chief among them are:
1. Poor study habits in school.
2. Students doing just enough to get by.
3. Poor parental supervision with homework.
4. Students having no pride in excelling.
5. Laxity after schooling with no pride in improved writing. Other interests had priority over education.
6. Plain laziness in English basics.

When I was a senior in high school I went to a local "college" to take an exam for a scholarship. While I was taking my test my father was given a handout about the school and the programs offered.
After I completed the test I went out to meet my father for the ride home. He had taken the informational packet and, in red ink, corrected all the spelling errors, the sentences that had been ended with prepositions and sentences that went nowhere. He handed it to the woman who had administered the test. When she asked why he was handing it back he told her " I hope your staff did not attend this school because the level of incompetence I found in this packet is discouraging." She was flabbergasted and quickly apologized.
Then during the drive home my father told me, "Honey, when you have children you need to teach them yourself, because in this day and age the schools are garbage. Too many students and too many teachers who can't or won't correct them when they massacre the English language."

Some of the people here are only beginning to learn English. Don't you know that the people signed in yahoo are from different nationalities? Chinese, Indian, Malaysian, Japanese, etc...Instead of complaining, why not help them out a bit by correcting them. For others who really are English or American, well, they're probably typing too fast or ignoring the check spelling icon.

I have felt the same way as you too often. I actually ranted about that on here once already. You did a much better job at keeping your frustration under control more than I did though LOL. I'm in my 20's and feeling so old already because I can't understand the "new lingo" (or lack-there-of). You're not alone for feeling this way but at least I do see it being a minority of the online community - we just better hope that it remains that way.

I agree. There are so many people on here who just totally disregard grammar. It really makes people look ignorant and uneducated...especially since there is a spell check right at the top of this answer box..lol.

The problem with spelling is the standards of the public school system have gone down year after year. Poor teachers, poor support system, and lower standards make for a more illiterate America!

I don't think their spelling is as bad as it appears. Many people use a lot of abbreviated language on websites such as this, which can sometimes look like they have grammer problems. In addition, many people type very fast and neglect to correct their mistakes. I think it comes down to laziness more than actual ability.

I judge people when they misspell words and use bad grammar. I do this even when they type "ur" or "tho" when they are typing something that is not a text message with limited space. I mean, come on, it does not take that much more effort to type the extra letters!
