I am looking forward to adding a malasian trumpet snail to my aquerium after hearing good things about them. I don't know where to buy them and I need some details on how much room they need and how big they get.

I love MTS (Malaysian Trumpet Snails) they get to be 1/2 inch in size. They are excellent at keeping the gravel all nice and aerated. They are very beneficial to planted tanks.

You usually will not have to buy them just go look at the tanks at a local fish store. Ask them if you could have a few. They are usually more than willing to hand them over.

My population started with 6 and now I have too many to count. Since they are asexual they will reproduce no matter what. Their population will grow depending on how much food is available. For instance if you tend to over feed your fish the population could get out of hand.

I think the largest one I've ever seen (but I haven't made a study of them) is about 1/2". They generally burrow into the gravel (and if you have an undergravel filter system, they'll get under the grate and die and reproduce so be careful) keeping the gravel loose and aerated. They are generally nocturnal so you may not see them often. They'll eat stuff that gets caught in the gravel and reproduce freely.

The most common type gets to about 1", there are 2 other semi-common kinds that get slightly larger than that.

You don't need to feed them, they are scavengers. They prefer sand or small gravel to burrow in and they are great for your plants. Don't overfeed or you will have more snails than you know what to do with.

Many stores have them and don;t even know it. All too often they can come in on plants, so try looking around stores that carry lots of plants and see if you can spot any. If you find them, just ask if you can have some snails, odds are they will look at you funny and then give them to you. Here's some good info on them:

Hope that helps

the best place to buy them would be from privatly owned pet shops that specialize in fish. Or the alternative of petco which has sick and dirty fish
