They probably desired to be treated like humans. Instead they were bought and traded like cattle. They had no choice on how to live. They were head housekeepers at most, baby machines, sounding boards, out and out proletariats, and probably some of them were even punching bags for their obnoxious, over-bearing husbands.
They were "given" in marriage to a new owner, sometimes without her consent. She was traded like a business deal to the highest bidder... :-| If the father has money, they got a better deal for her. If she was poor, she was treated like crap. She'd be fortunate if she fell in love with someone of her own kind... rich or poor... and was treated humanely.
Although I do admit there may have been "some good men" during those times. :-) Respectable men who know how to treat women.

I completely agree with you. I think that for the most part when people think of the Victorian Era they think of Castles and wealth. They never think about how suppressed women were then. They had no voice and were thought to have no feeling. Strange... but great question.

It depended on the woman. That was the era of the suffragette movement when women were struggling to get the right to vote. Look up Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony. These were amazing women we owe a lot to today... and there were plenty more like them.
My grandmother turned 21 in 1921 (AFTER the Victorian era) which was the year women got the vote in the US. Pretty cool... but sad that it took so long.

We have a good amount of feminist literature from that era which indicates that many women wanted freedom to speak, move and live just as much then as now.
Good luck

I would assume like ladies unlike too many today. However in those times males pretty much set the tone & mores for womens behavior. They were put on a pedetal & thetr were lots of social & relationship taboos placed upon them. Interaction between the sexes was greatly regulated. Sorry but that's the way it was then.
