Reason I say this is because I have met the most beautiful woman that I have ever met in my life. She was english, graceful, reserved and absolutely perfect. And I worry that she might have been put off by my rather boisterous personality. I realize that Americans can be a little rough around the edges, and I guess the first step of overcoming this is to recognize it!

From an outsider's perspective I would say that a lot of them are perceived that way, even though it is a gross generalisation. Some Americans I know are fantastic and not like that at all, others remind you that stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason. Maybe identifying it is a start. The thing that I find about them often, is that they have these grandiose opinions on the world and the wars and racial issues when they have never left their own state and seen the world. Maybe she's dying for someone to tear her out of her shell, opposites attract and all that. A big personality is fine but Americans can be so damn noisy! You walk in a bar here in NZ and you can hear if there is one there. The big laugh and telling stories at the top of their lungs. If it's a good story, you don't need to yell it! Be yourself, whatever the case. These things aren't necessarily bad, don't go changing for some girl.

It really depends. I have noticed, though, that on a whole, their percentage of obnoxiousness *is* considerably higher. Heck, I'm in Ontario, and I can ALWAYS guess an American from their attitudes. They tend to be louder, more abrasive, less polite. To some, this is an endearing quality, kind of a quaint quirk, but not to everyone. I met my husband in the States, when I was in university, and when I met him, I thought he was a Canuck; he was that different, that polite. I was shocked to find out he was American! He even spoke English properly! LOL But, like you said, if you think you're being a bit loud or coarse, the first step is to recognize it. After that, it's up to you to decide if you *want* to be softer, quieter, or more polite. In the grand scheme, it really doesn't matter -- if she likes you, she should like you for who you are. That's what matters most, so if you're a Texan who likes to yell about cows and oil, don't change for anyone!!! :)

You're wondering if Americans as a whole, all 300 million of them, are obnoxious, because you met some English hottie and you think that perhaps you came across as obnoxious.

This makes almost no sense at all, but I guess I'll indulge you.

If you're obnoxious, then you're obnoxious. If you're not, you're not. If she thinks that you are obnoxious just because of your nationality, then that's her stereotype to live with, and hence not your problem.

But even if you are obnoxious, and the English hottie perceived you as such, it doesn't mean that all Americans are obnoxious. I don't know you, but I'm pretty sure than one person isn't an accurate representation of an entire nation, be it a nation with 3 people, or 300,000,000.

Did you get her number?

I have traveled the world and nobody, anywhere can be as thoroughly obnoxious as an Englishwoman. This is a generalization, but then we are dealing with a generalized concept "Are Americans,etc.). Let me clear: I'm talking about a certain type: the Iron Lady/Royal ***** thing. I've never seen anything like it. I'd rather hang out with anyone from anywhere than an Englishwoman in high dungeon. Hence, your experience of the English lasses leaves me somewhat taken aback. Reserved? Are you kidding? Not in my experience.

Yes true.. i actually think so bc everyone is stressed about what's currently happening and wat already happened.. G.W is turning everyone around and our country is becoming very depressed..
-- Actually, im an american yet i try not to act cranky.. i also think it's because of the unhealthy eating habits we have here -- if you've got unhealthy eating habits, than you've got an unhealthy lifestyle.. our country is very obese and no one seems to give a ______!
-- I think it's sick, disgusting, and i think its also representing our country in a very awful way..
i would speak up but im only a kid -- turning 13 on the 16 of april btw :) -- and i dont think anyone would really care for my voice.. but if someone can step up and voice out their opinions than everything wouldn't be this way.. and everyone would live in peace for at least a little while.. that would bring all the joy in the world for me.. and for war to end, etc., etc.
~~ Here is a link that i think is good for people to see how grateful they should be of themselves and their countries:

It depends on the American...some are and some aren't. Just like with any culture or country, we all have them. I do think that some people consider us obnoxious because we are generally outspoken, usually opinionated and often times just a tad bit loud. If that is your definition of obnoxious then I suppose most of us are.

Not all, but some are. This applies to all nationalities, religions, races and ethnic groups. You may not believe this, but we're all the same.
Some people you like, some people you don't.
A mixed relationship is full of pit falls. It requires give and take and more than a little understanding from both sides.
