My mom is 61, lives in the DC area, and is bummed because she doesn't do much besides work and sleep. Any hobby ideas? She likes cats, socializing, and popular fiction, but we're willing to expand her horizons. She already knits and crochets, so no more crafts...

I should have been more specific...how about something that doesn't require her to *purchase* anything else? I don't want to have her start consuming/collection things...we're not that kind of family.

maybe taking ballroom dance lessons or even cooking lessons? they sometimes offer them at local community centers.
Volunteer at a local animal shelter since she likes cats.
If she's already got either a film or digital camera maybe start taking pictures as a hobby.
Volunteer to read to children or senior citizens.
Try writing poetry or short stories & getting them published in magazines.
Crossword puzzles.
Gardening
With the knitting and crocheting she already does, maybe she could donate them to a womens or children's charity.
Get involved with a book club.

If she likes popular fiction, she might like a reading group, either in the city or online. Several sites like people to give reviews on books.
I like the idea of volunteering, but that depends on whether she likes to go out or not. If she would rather stay home, her volunteering could be doing call lists for different organizations, etc.
She might also like to teach knitting and crocheting to a senior group or youth group. It's much more fun to learn in a class then trying yourself. I always enjoyed taking classes in crafts.
Good Luck! ~-~

Well, everyone is different and i don't know what you like, but i would suggest photography. I really enjoy it, and if you already have a digital camera, it is an inexpensive hobby. Also, reading is always an option. Picking up an instument to play is also a great idea, however, its initial cost may be a downside. good luck!

She could join a skydiving group. Not only does it allow you to talk to a bunch of people about how scared she is, (which, if she is the typical woman, will lead to tons of other conversing about totally off-topic subjects,) but it will get her blood flowing while maybe burning a few calories. Its good for the heart and the soul. It is a bit pricy though.

Never been to DC but isn't it full of museums and stuff? Maybe she could volunteer at one that catches her interest.
Maybe become a docent if she really likes it. The Smithsonian has a bunch of museums in the area. She could try one of them as a starting point.

how about writing to the troops overseas if she like to socialize i know there are many soldiers out there that dont get much mail and would love to get letters and would probably write back. she would probably get a few pen pals.
volunteer at the local VFW for bingo or play bingo
if she gets the newspapers, clip coupons for the senior homes in the area
book clubs are always fun
if it more to get her out of the house, go to the local park district, rec center, library, or church and see if there are any senior clubs or activities she would like to do or try

Would she enjoy cooking? Would she enjoy visiting shut-ins? Maybe she'd like helping to tutor underprivileged children? Does the local animal shelter need volunteers?
Maybe she could join a chat group for people with cats. Could you help her find one?

Mabe a hobby isnt what ur lookin for. Instead try a collection. Mbe stamps or buttons.....anything!
But if she likes working with her hands I have a group she may like.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Paper_Models/
There are people older than her in there and it seems to help with arthritis and the like. Its for all ages and skill levels.

maybe try Bingo or maybe she might like scrapbooking or flower planting once the weather gets nice.....or maybe she might write out everything she has experienced over the years in a journal so that one day everyone has something to remember her by and she could also do that and reminisce on those things as well....or maybe she could try remodeling her home such as rearranging or something....I am only trying to help.....I hope these didn't offend you or her...I apologize in advance if it did (about having the journal to remember her by) good luck

Sounds like she should figure it out for herself...seems you have removed several ideas from consideration. Did she ask for help? Maybe if you spent some time with her instead of deciding her life for her she would be a happier person.
