The inside of the stomach has a nice mucous lining that protects it from stomach acids. Ulcers (sores in the stomach lining itself) can start when something -- stress, bacterial infection -- causes the mucous lining to break down or the cells that produce the mucous are somehow damaged.
Good question!

Sometimes it does. That's called an ulcer. There are protective measures at work, though. There is a coating of the lining of the stomach that protects it somewhat. This barrier prevents certain enzymatic activity, and also prevents the low pH from damaging the stomach.

The stomach's lining is protective, and a feedback mechanism makes sure that the pH doesn't drop below a certain level.

Layers and layers of mucosa, submucosa, smooth muscle tissue & serosa line the stomach wall. And hormones such as secretin, GIP, gastrin... regulates gastric acid & mobility preventing the acid from destroying the lining of the stomach wall.

#1 mucous lining
#2 the chemical responsible for digestion, pepsin, is not in its active form before it is secreted; hydrochloric acid activates pepsinogen, turning it into pepsin-hydrochloric acid is produced by parietal cells, and pesinogen is produced by chief cells, so the two don't mix before secretion
