Hmm. So I am getting my car worked on, and the mechanic calls me for phone authorization for some work. Standard.
Then he says, "Now I have to ask you kind of a weird question. In order to verify that you are actually giving this authorization, the government has me ask you this: where did you go to high school?".
So I told him where I went, thinking even if this is BS, what harm could he do with that information? And he started trying to make small talk about my hometown.
Just wondering if any of you are mechanics or have heard of this new "federal regulation"! Is that a legit way to get phone authorization, or was he just satisfying his own personal curiosity (or worse)?

Sounds to me like he is a stalker. There is no such federal regulation. Calling you for authorization for repairs is a common practice, but where you went to high school is none of his business. You need to get your car from him and take it elsewhere. When you go to get it, DO NOT go alone, have the police accompany you if necessary. I would also take the time to fill them in on the bullsquash that this mechanic mentioned to you.

AW, HELL NAW!!! This fool is a couple sammiches short of a picnic or something! I deliver auto parts to mechanics every day and none of them would ever ask such an idiotic question! They call the customer, tell them the problems and prices, and the customer says yes or no. Besides, how would he know you were telling him the truth? HE don't know WHERE the hell you went to high school, and the government don't care, and wouldn't tell him anyway!

There is no such Federal, state, local law requiring you to give that sort of information to anyone. The guy is flirting and wants to know more about you. It's BS. But you probably knew that. Just remember not to give anyone any personal information unless you are flirting back and want them to know.

I think u better have a talk with the Manager of the work shop. I have been asked for my phone number and address which is standard, but nothing beyond that.

Definitely. Your specs far surpass the requirements. The answers directly above and directly below me are wrong, since they assume you're running an ATI graphics card, but I know nobody would put an older ATI card in a machine with a quad core CPU. You mean an nVidia GeForce 9500GT, correct?

He is hitting on you!!! Are you hot? A rather unique approach, I might add. But no, no new "federal regulation" to find out what H.S. you went to. Good luck.
