is it legal to work for a company commision only and owe them money''''' it not right?

I work for 84 lumber on commision only sales , and because some of my customers did not pay there bill, or went bankrupt, 84 is charging me for the lumber i owe them 3 thousand dollars can they do this .. im upset , what is my recourse
