There is a "Second Law of Thermodynamics" that indicates that while energy cannot be destroyed, some types of energy are better than others. Moreover, there is an entity called entropy, which no one really understands, but is always increasing. As a very broad concept, entropy increases occur because energy at a lower absolute temperature is less efficient than at a high absolute temperature. Thus, energy can become "degraded" by conversion to a less effective form or by discharge at a lower temperature.

While energy can not be destroyed, it can change forms. Some forms of energy are a lot harder for humans to harness and use. So, people worry about the supplies that are easily used and easier to work with running out and having to adapt to the other forms of energy.

It is true that the energy is not "destroyed" however in our position in history there are innumerable sources of energy that go to waste because we have not the technology to take advantage of them fiscally. The enegy from the sun is so much more than we could ever possibly need but we just haven't harnessed it's potential yet.

Because all the energy is lost through heat....
You use energy to speed a car up, then use brakes to slow it down. The brakes heat up, energy is lost....
Your engine heats up as chemical energy is transfered to kinetic energy, energy lost again.
It isn't destroyed, just lost through heat transfer....
