Today, all charges were dropped against the young men, but all were forced to leave school for a time. One was allowed to graduate, and the others were eventually invited back but declined. These men were totally let down by Duke University - abandoned by the school to which they paid tuition. Much has been said about the rogue DA Nifong and the plantiff who changed her story (both of whom should be dealt with by the legal system), but what about Duke University and its president? What about them? Who are they accountable to? If not the students, then who?

The University should apologize to the students. They were trying to "protect the campus" but probably jumped the gun on their response. They acted on public outcry rather than the facts, and, in retrospect, did so incorrectly. So, while this may not be punishable in court, the University does owe the students an explanation and an opportunity to return - although the students refused this. If there were financial losses to the students/families because of transfer and tuition costs, then the University should pay that to them. I imagine that would be a small sum and the LEAST that Duke could do.

The DA needs to pay a heavy penalty. Duke U. owes a huge public apology for sure and probably more. Charges should be filed if " victim" did indeed lie. If she has a mental problem then no.

I believe the ambition of Mike Nifong brought this all about. The problem that is usually encountered with States Attorneys or DA's is that they wont file charges. They usually want a dead bang case before entertaining any charges.

This is a strong stance especially since it comes from a retired Policeman.

Duke president Richard Brodhead should offer a formal apology and give the students 3 years of free tuition for ruining their college schedule.

Next, the 3 students should file a lawsuit against the DA's office or state for abuse of power.

It would be good if Duke did something to make amends to those guys. I don't know what, though. Certainly a public apology is in order.

I think it's enough for the DA to have to pay for what he did.

The school was probably within their rights. They do have to protect all the other students, after all.
