Tops on my list would have to be the City Museum. http://www.citymuseum.org/home.asp
I also recommend going to a Cardinals game at Busch Stadium, or even just hanging out in that area before a game.
The Anheuser Busch brewery tour is free and fascinating, and you even get free samples at the end.
Check out the Missouri Botanical Gardens if you like flowers and plants.

Few know that St. Louis has some of the best Italian dining in the world. There is a section of the city called "The Hill" that has amazing restaurants. My personal favorite is House of Cunetto's (not sure of the spelling). Price is very reasonable and food is incredible!
Also consider going into Illinois. Up river from Alton is Pere Marquette State Park that has very good hiking trails (free!) and bicycles can be rented in Grafton for cycling trails. There are also cool places to eat in Grafton. Antique shopping there is great, too. Browsing is free.
