I had asked almost exactly the same question, and settled on the Macbook. It has a duo core 2 processor, 1g ram, 80 g hd for 1300 bucks. It also comes with neat software already installed, not a bunch of stuff you don't want or need.
I did a lot of research, and came to the conclusion (I may have heard this somewhere; but it's really true!) that it is very similar to the "Chevy vs. Ford" question. That is, what do you like? what are you looking for?
Spend a little time checking the different brands out! (I spent over 3 weeks!) You'll be glad for all the time you took later on!

I'd recommend you do a little on-line research. For example, both Gateway and Dell have online sites where you can customize a laptop computer for speed, memory, portability, graphics and price. Not a bad place to start! Also, you may want to find a computer sales store near you to try a few laptops out yourself. After looking at a few in person (testing the keyboard, deciding on what size screen is best for you), you'll have a better idea of the computer you want whether you buy it online or in a store..

i dont suggestion ppl get laptops except you have a private pc pc first, the 1st ingredient to pass out on your computing gadget would be your battery afther a whilst it wont be waiting to hold a can charge u will consistently choose the charger, and if some thing gose incorrect you cant basically walk in a save and purchase alternative areas, i had a computing gadget my video card went out it coast approximately 50-a hundred funds for a video card for a table proper yet for my computing gadget six hundred greenbacks

One thing I have learned so far about computer brands, the best.

Dell. I have a six year old Dell which has never been repaired and broken down. Runs like brand new today. But hey, that's not my only Dell computer; I have 4 more. Yes, they're all Dell, and I have never had a problem with them all. That's enough for me to say that Dell is better than the rest.

My friend's Sony was replaced with a Dell notebook. Yeah, his sony fried.

My neighbors are all aware of HP computers. Stay away from them.

Gateway sucks.

Everyone hates Dell it seems, but what I can't understand is how they always replace their computers with a dell. That's right, a dell.

Visit this link to view the Dell notebook that I am recommeding you to purchase. http://www.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/inspn_e1405?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs

Get 2GB of RAM

Get 120GB Hard drive. Get a decent GPU. That's all you need.

Bye for now.

Do an online search. My sis bought a Toshiba and it broke the day she got it. Everyone else in my family has HP's and have never had any problems. I've had 5 HP's, both desktops and laptops, and I have 2 HP printers, and an HP digital camera and have never had any problems with them either.

i just bought from fry's a hp dv9230us super fast. it was 1449.00 +50 rebate? i started with a budget of 600. i recommend you pay Attn. to video specs. to try to future proof your PC. better video chip set=better/faster CPU + faster/more ram. i looked/studied for about 6 weeks and even bought and returned to wal-mart a dv6226cl & dv6247cl & almost had hp build one custom. i did not limit myself to hp ,it's just after balancing price to features there was only 1 answer
