My opinion is that we don’t do enough at grass roots level.

But we as a nation try to be the best at almost every sport available.
For example Australia are the best at Cricket and Rugby and are one of the best at Swimming, bowls, tri-athlon and only really compete internationally at those events. Their others are so hot athletics for example.
New Zealand are only any good at Rugby and Cricket.
India Only Cricket

England by contrast try to be the best at Rugby, Cricket, Football, Athletics, Bowls, Tri-atlon, Athletics, Swimming, Tennis, badminton, hockey, Boxing etc. etc. We have to keep inventing sports to continue to be the best then someone else comes along e.g. darts the unbeatable 13-time Darts world Champion lost his crown to a Dutchman.

With all these different sports being pushed is it any wonder the most talented individuals may be lost to another sport.

In saying that we don’t do to badly though do we at all those sports.

5th (currently in the world cup) at Cricket
Current World Champs in Rugby
Bowls indoor champion has come from Britain every year since 1992
Triathlon- Mens 15th (Tim Don) Womens 9th (Andrea Whitcombe)
Tennis - Andy Murrey (alright he’s Scottish) 11th in the ATP rankings
Snooker – British players dominate the top ten
Darts – Phil Taylor will probably win back the world title
Hockey – Men are 9th and Women 11th
Olympics – We were 10th in the rankings with 9 Gold, 9 Silver and 12 Bronze

We also have several world champions at Rowing, Boxing and Equestrian

This shows that as a nation we are very sporting but the cream in individual sports may be taken by other sports as we try to be the best at so many.

I don't think that England is playing bad cricket these days... The reason is that the Lankans are playing way better cricket than England.. In the first two matches, England chased the scores pretty well, even though they lost both the games, and in the 3rd game, 261 against all those aggressive bowlers is not a bad score at all. The way the Lankans chased it is really amazing..England would have won it had it not been with Sri Lanka. It is simply, the Lankans are playing better cricket than England and its pity that England couldn't win atleast one match against SL so far.. I believe that both the teams are equally balanced with players cos' both the teams are playing without a few top players at the moment.. England need a major moral boost I think..

The real answer to this is all about their history and a little bit about gene technology!! Believe it or not, cricket was actually invented in the prisons of Britain a long time ago. What they used to do in those days was to transport most of the long term prisoners and con men down South, to Australia. Hence, most of the good cricketers ended up there and better cricketers descended from them. Simple genetics!!! LOL

While lot of talented players emerged in countries like Australia, South Africa, Sri Lanka etc., England is lacking in talent and as such has not been able to emerge a strong team in the world.

I don't think the players want to get out of their comfort zone....or maybe they're not allowed to (Who's in charge? Who's the tactitian up there playing on the computer?). Maybe it's too damn hot for them in the Carribean as it was in Australia? Maybe 6 games in 42 days is bordering on lethargy? Maybe they ALL need to go out and get drunk and sink the bloody pedalos? They certainly don't deserve celebratory sex with their wives and girlfriends tonite after their lacklustre win over Bangladesh. I hate pondering such thoughts, cos I love the England team and will support them all the way. Love ya Colly, love ya Spud (sex with me instead would pick your games up!) ;-)

Probably in the top 5 in the world , which dosent make us THAT bad, but we are not as good as we like to think we are sometimes . I think the national game still needs to evolve and a lot of the old ways need to change , but I take your point , we should really be better.
