Modern car exteriors should be just fine. Interiors can get awfully hot though. I'd put one of those sun shades in the front window.

Police dogs are routinely left in the police car throughout the shift, that is just the way it is. K-9 cars in the States have many different devices installed in them to protect the dogs from the heat. Automatic window openers, A/C monitors, pagers that will inform the K-9 officer or dispatcher if something should go wrong, etc! No officer wants to see his K-9 die in a car because of the heat...that is just ridiculous. We have no idea what happened, what failed or whatever it was that caused the dogs death, but, it is not customary to punish the dog handler unless he deliberately caused the dog's death ADD: I cannot comment on anything that happened in the UK, I have no idea how the dogs are kept in the cars, what protection devices they have to protect the dogs, etc, I can only say how things are done here!! ADD:Ben...a dog is NOT a child, do not humanize an animal. A child died here recently after being left in a hot car, the mother is facing charges. I had a dog die while on duty, not in a car, it hurt just the same though. People need to stop making accusations until they know the FULL story, a police dog's death is tragig because he was a working member of a police force, serving people, I am certain the handler is NOT feeling great about it. Wait til the details come out, then crucify!!

The easiest thing would be to get a sun shade and put it in the windshield, and maybe another for the rear window if you have a fast back.
If you want to protect the paint as well, then it would have to be a full car cover. They make different grades and thicknesses for different purposes, so check with the manufacturer to determine which suits your needs. Good luck

car covers, waxing, and sunshade/reflectors work well. However, heat will still get in of course and that is what ruins your interior, specifically your dash, but any vinyl, leather or plastic really. For your dash you could buy a carpet cover that they sell custom to fit your vheicle model or you could get some armorall plastic/vinyl protectant/cleaner and apply it every so often so that it does not dry up and crack, which is what I would recommend. this will help to maintain your vehicle's interior.

Purchase one of those reflective car covers...they really help keep the exterior and interior protected.
