Escondido used to be really nice, but it has been going downhill for a while. A number of upscale neighborhoods, but some really bad schools (at least compared to other nearby north county areas like Rancho Bernardo, Poway, Penasquitos, etc.).
A recent local newspaper had an article about gangs in Escondido and had a map showing the areas of gang infestations. This was pretty shocking as North San Diego never was known for having gang activity in the past.

It really depends in Escondido. It's very pockety. There is an area in the north called Escondido Hills (zip 92026). There are some nice neighborhoods around there. In the center of town there are some run-down apartments and some trailer parks. There are some huge homes on large lots in the South and South East (92025,92027). In general, you get more for your money up there, and everything you need is up there. But it's warmer than other parts of town and kind of far from the major airport in SD. Getting anywhere from up there during rush hour is really difficult. The i-15 traffic N bound to Escondido is terrible, and the 78 isn't that great either.
They've done a lot of improvements. And Eric Clapton named his last album "The Road to Escondido" because he stayed with someone in Valley Center and would come down to see the cars at "Cruisn Grand". So, it's ok and there are some nice places, it just depends on what you can afford and what your needs are.

Housing in Escondido is less expensive than in San Diego, so there are a lot of people who live there and commute to work. My daughter married a guy from there so we know about it some.
It's a small town, and has a different atmosphere--more chance of running into people you know. They do a lot of community stuff. There are lot's of churches there, of every denomination, and a lot of people get their sense of community from their church. The public schools may not be good, but that's public school for you! --there are several good charter (free) and private schools there.
There are many nice parks and lakes close by, plus a major mall. The Escondido Performing Arts Center has lots of cultural events, and it's an hour away from downtown San Diego. It's also close to the beach, the mountains and the desert.
And did I say housing is cheaper? When you move here you'll see that's a real issue!

Escondido is an ok place to live, like the first post said there is some ghetto parts, and little high school brats roaming around the streets after school and then there's some beautiful parts where it's green and has some hills and trees, but it's expensive to live in that area.

You won't like it-financially that is.
What is your house in AZ worth? $200,000 maybe? With maybe $35,000 in equity.
Average house in Escondido is $500,000 for 3 BR/2Ba (1500SF) in a decent neighborhood. [Readers-correct me if I'm wrong] So what are the payments on a $400,000 loan? Will you make ends meet on his Sales salary/commission and your eventual nursing job? What about commute times/bad traffic jams, child care, failed schools and a growing crime rate. It just isn't a place to raise a family.
I grew up in Escondido (SPHS1983), and it was a lovely place in the 70's and 80's; but I saw early on what was happening and cashed out and have a beautiful house in a national forest (2200SF-new construction-$173,000, yearly taxes are $1000) with a great school district and a leisurely lifestyle in Missouri because I'm not working myself crazy to pay a ridiculous mortgage.
Move somewhere nicer, and just come to San Diego for vacations. "It's a nice place to visit, but you don't want to live there".

Ditto the others about Escondido. Poway/Rancho Bernardo are just south of there and are great for families and still affordable (where are you moving from?). Some bad areas in Poway but generally fine. RB has lots of retired people. Rancho Penasquitos is nice too.

Escon-dirty! I'm not a fan of that area unless you are wealthy. From the sounds of it, you are a middle income family. You'll financially struggle out here in CA, stay in Arizona!
