Well I think I'd have to say my family.(even though they are not things and I don't take them for granted)During the haulocaust families were torn apart so I can't think of anything worse other than the not knowing if they were alive or dead.. If memories are things then I'd have to say that.It must be terrible for someone to struggle living with Altzimers and the resulting memory loss.It has to be so tragic for the family as well.

Your teacher is asking you this question because he/she wants you to reflect on your own life. Many young people these days take much for granted. The IPod, XBox generation often cannot identify with people's lives in other countries or in other times, especially, people who have had their rights compromised. I have great difficulty getting my students to think more globally and empathetically, and this is a very important skill. If you don't learn to think globally, who is going to fix all of the problems in the world? So please, rather than asking us what we take for granted and writing about that, examine your own life and what you take for granted. What is really important to you? What do you value more than anything else?

Sorry to go on a rant, but I've recently had students tell me that having too much homework or too many chores is real suffering and that poverty means not being able to afford the latest designer brands.

Good luck on your assignment.
