Fairies are real and are nothing to toy around with. While they can be helpful, they are very mischievious creatures and can be a royal pain to get rid of.
Spend time in the woods, amongst flowers & trees. Look to the rootbase of trees, among fallen leaves, under bushes. Open your heart and mind and simply ask the fae to visit.
Make sure to leave an offering of some food, nuts, milk or honey when you release them. Tell them they may go and that you appreciated their company..but do not thank them. For whatever reason, this really pi$$es them off.

Some very good answers given so far.
Fairies are like any other creature; alot of it depends upon the one you meet. Some are very gentle and quite curious about the human world, others have been 'scarred' by their interactions and thus use their energy to play tricks and cause mischief.
Meditating is useful, but some people try to channel their meditations into an uncomfortable 'pose' and think that this is the ONLY way to make oneself open. Not every penguin uses a song to find their mate; not every person needs to sit cross-legged to be at one with nature.
I find the best way to attract what you want (fairies, elves, angels, etc) is to put yourself into a place where you are most likely to find what you are looking for. Even flowers and trees within the forest attract different kinds of fairires; a very intense fairy is not likely going to be hanging around a dandelion, they will be found among roses or even poison oak. Likewise, gentle fairies tend to hang around shy or hard-to-reach flowers, flowers most people don't notice.
Another thing about fairies is that it helps if one has a wonderfully developed sense of wonder (kinda redundant but not really) and a healthy respect for nature. In other words, brashly walking into a forest, stomping every-which-way and expecting to find what you are looking for isn't likely to work. In some ways, the techniques of 'hunting' apply, only you aren't looking to 'bag' a fairy for your wall. Slowly stalking, being open to the signs, keeping your distance, developing patience, all very useful traits as well.
Fairies are very much creatures that you have to prove your worth to before they will grace you with their presence. Thus, the idea of gifts (bread, milk, a gentle sprinkling of really good dirt) can very much be an enticement to prove to them that you are worth taking a chance upon.
One thing that most people don't tell you is that not everyone experiences 'fairies' in the same fashion. Which means that if you are primarily an audio person, its not likely you will be very successful at seeing the fairies, but it is possible you will be able to hear them. Fairies are mostly 'recoginized' by the sense by which we ourselves are most developed in.
It's better to go out into nature to find them, but its just as easy to have a plant within your own space and have some gather around that. Fairies aren't very comfortable around the city, but the presence of nature wherever it is found is still a call to them which they are reluctant to ignore.
A desire for something/anything is only the first step. It is up to you to determine how far you will go, and thus how successful you will be.

There are many ways, although the ancient celts used to use 'brews' (as in drinks) that specifically heightened ones astral sense to allow communication with what they called the Tylwyth Teg (Faeries).
If you don't have any of those kind of drinks, or would prefer a different method I can suggest focussing your sight through your third eye chakra (located in the middle of your forehead). You'll need to close your eyes at first when you do this, but after practice you should be able to focus your vision through it without closing your physical eyes. When you get to this stage you'll see both the physical world and it's astral counterpart overlaying each other.
Don't be concerned if you fail to make contact with anything at first, astral entities generally only contact those of the physical plane for a good reason...

They won't just appear because you want them too
Faries can be very sneaky they can be a flicker in the corner of your eye once you gain focus they disappear.
I was told they like a Mushroom statue to hide under and my dog is always looking at the statue and barks at them.
Try that and remember that little flicker in the corner of your eye try not to change your energy level into surprise as that is a main factor for them to disappear as well
I am surrounded by Fairies and Angels many Mediums have seen them and told me
Love & Blessings

Its sweet that you believe in this stuff, but fairies are in the same league as dragons and elves, in the sense that they are all myths. If you do find some fairies though make sure to put them in a jar and show them to scientists, you'll be a millionaire overnight.
