God, I am so sick of hearing about this crap. I agree with your comments. Yes, we are intitating a double standard and I wish black people would stop being so emotional and offended by every damn idiot that says something stupid. The Rutgers basketball player who said she was scarred for life... WTF? Over what Don Imus said? She is going to live a very painful hard life if she is that thin-skinned because believe it or not, there are people who will say worst things than what he said and treat her like crap. So, she and all the others might as well get prepared for it and learn to not let stupidity and hatred ruin their happiness.
And I don't care if our ancestors were enslaved and all that jazz... wrong is wrong. There is no excuse for the double standard or allowing blacks to say stupid self-loathing crap because they are black.

In a country where our railroads and cities were built on slave labor and now there is a different form of it with the Mexican people, I have to say that there is a double standard for a reason.
When you live in a country where we need to defeat racism, its become NOT o.k. to say anything funny about another race unless you are talking about your own race.
For example, a white can't make a harmless racist comment about a black without being all up in arms because of the fact that we have a long way to go.
A black can make a harmless racist comment about a white and people will look the other way.
If the table were turned, and Western Civilization were indeed, black and the white people were brought over for the slave trade, then I'm sure the opposite would be true.

i think we are setting a double standard, because on one hand we have some of our people wanting themselves and others to respect our women but at the same time they support the rappers and exploiters who don't respect our women. I mean they care more about fixing up their cars with rims and beats and making a quick buck than doing right by a good woman. And yes I think that some black people make others look like we don't know what we want but it all comes down to how you put yourself out there.

I agree with you. I look on TV BET to be exact, and all of the rap videos are filled with filthy, dirty dancing, half naked women on TV and barely get paid like someone is gonna notice them and remember their face because they are on TV. Rap videos to be exact. SOME rappers can actually rap like Jay-z, or Nas and you barely see any naked women dancing in their videos because there D*mn good rappers, and dont need half naked women dancing in their videos to atract people, they know their music is good already. Half of the rappers out there sound so foolish, that it just makes me sick! They cant rap! And I get sick of seeing their faces. What I dont get is when they take out all the cussing in a video and keep the naked women, and all that other nasty stuff in there. Is that what we want to show ourselves as? Just sitting up in a video talking about getting laid, drinking, and doing drugs? But for the most part I think the black community has progressed a lot and I'm happy for that. But I think rap videos are our main problem. Sorry I wrote so much, and thankyou for asking this question and giving people the oppertunity to express their feelings.
Thankyou and I hope I helped!

Yes black people should. However, I hate how people lump all blacks together. All whites don't listen to rock. All whites don't listen to country. But people lump black people like everyone is the same and participates in this garbage. Some blacks don't listen to rap. Some blacks don't listen to music or videos that demean women. Some blacks don't use the N-word. But just as all whites don't have control over what came out of Don Imus mouth, all blacks cannot control what has gone on with black culture.

We should have more respect for ourselves. I don't agree with our black entertainers who exploits us as one and most of all, themselves. Its not about if the shoe fits, wear it as they say. I feel they are just as bad as the racists. Even though it is part of our culture unfortunately, it sends the wrong message to other races and the other races see us as people who are oppressed and still have the mind of a slave. Even people from our motherland sees us that way, but most of us are not. If they just sit back and think about what they say and do without trying to sell themselves maybe they might understand.

Of course - the biggest change will come from WITHIN. Nobody is up for a popularity contest - but the Black community must talk about these issues from the inside.
Why don't churches get on with solutions?? Why?? Just preaching is obviously not helping. There is nothing I find more useless than the church - but that's just me. I'll bet on dialogue and education. Secular education.

Wow, a lot of hatred for such a straight forward question.
I agree with you, the Black community needs to be upset and outraged no matter who is doing the slandering, wether it be Dave Chappelle or Michael Richards, use of the N words needs to be condemned equally, no matter who uses it. Then maybe we can work on re-educating the hopeless idiots, such as the first two people who responded to this question.

I agree with you, how can we be offended by one man's comments when you can listen to same comments made by sucessful black rappers. I do not support anyone who would disrespect me as person regardless of sex, race or religion. We should be outrage with anyone not showing respect to any one. I think if we all approach it as this is not acceptable from anyone we would have a better chance at changing these things.

I think the black culture has influenced the American society so much, that it cannot escape the stereotypes. It has become "cool" to be black. And rappers will exploit this for monetary purposes. So why aren't black people outraged? Because it has become the "norm" of society.
