I am selling something on Ebay and a user from Canada sent me a message wanting to know shipping costs to Toronto. The shipping ended up costing about $20.00 more than what I had listed for US shipping. The auction is not over yet but this user is currently the high bidder. How do I charge them for the shipping difference after they pay the original amount for the item? I am using Paypal.

You should contact the buyer and let them know the cost of shipping to Canada. I am sure they will expect it to be higher, but don't take this for granted, sometimes international buyers pay the US amount for shipping, then there is nothing you can do but eat the difference.

Once the auction closes you should send the buyer an invoice. You can change the amount of shipping on the invoice. Be sure to send the invoice as soon as the auction closes so that there will be no questions from the buyer.

In the future when you create your listing, be sure to include international shipping charges so you won't have to do this again.

Good luck with your listings.

In your auction you should state that shipping cost outside of the US will be higher. Since the auction is not over yet you can modify the listing. If you completed the domestic shipping rate section when you listed the item than it should be very clear to the bidder that this is US shipping only. As an ebay seller, I would email the bidder and let them know what the actual shipping charges will be.

I think there is a stage in the eBay/PayPal checkout procedure where the buyer can adjust the postage or the total price they are paying. Calculate the grand total that they would pay if they win, and tell them to be sure to adjust the total up to that amount if they win.

Alternatively, tell the buyer NOT to use the PayPal checkout if they win. Instead, send them a separate invoice from your regular PayPal account area for the grand total. Once they have paid, you just mark the item as Payment Received in your "My eBay" area in your eBay account.

Remember - there is no compulsion for a winning bidder to use the PayPal checkout when they win. Sending a separate PayPal invoice is fine, as long as everyone ends up satisfied.

Go into paypal, select the transaction and click on the link to dispute it. There are no charges for a paypal dispute as far as I know, last time an item didn't arrive I recieved my money back in full. Don't close the dispute until you have the item or the refund. Sellers are responsible for getting the item safely to you, if they sent it trackable (say royal mail recorded signed for) and have proof of delivery the will not lose the claim. But seeing as you don't have the item Some sellers recon if the buyer doesn't take out insurance they aren't responsible for lost items. They get a rude awakening as to their ignorance when a customer files a dispute.

Check out the following link to the eBay - Excessive Shipping Charges Policy. Yes, you can charge for additional shipping costs. http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/listing-shipping.html

As the sale is still open, you can change your listing for a small fee (I think between $00.30 and $1.00).

In the future you should have the following clause in your sales:
- $x.00 for shipping within the US
- Shipping additional for International, and all non-mainland US states/areas including Hawaii, Alaska, Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, etc. Price of shipping will be determined once the bidding is complete.

After the auction is over, just click on "Send Invoice" and adjust the shipping cost to the one you quoted for them. It's easy to do.

Tell the buyer about the extra cost, and add the $20 to the invoice when you email it to them.
