It is a set of printed books that describes many many things about the world. Usually there are about 20 volumes. Online encyclopdias have entries that can be read online, whereas the published pages of a set of ency. sits on the shelf, and you get the one that is for the letter of the item you are searching for.

Porcelain would be in the /P/ volume. for example.
