On 28th June, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary, was assassinated by the Serb nationalist Gavrilo Princip.
On 6th July the German government gave its support for Austro-Hungarian reprisals against Serbia. When Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, Russia and France began to mobilize its troops.
This resulted in Germany declaring war on Russia (1st August) and France (3rd August).
When the German Army entered Belgium on 4th August, Britain declared war on Germany.

Italy decided not to come to the aid of Germany and Austria-Hungary when war was declared in August, 1914. However, Turkey had signed a defensive alliance with Germany in July 1914 and two months later it joined the war against Britain, France and Russia.

Look, its great to have text book answers, but Franz Ferdinand is an insufficient reason to kill 24 million people!! 1 there was a naval arms race between Germany and Britian to gain supremecy over the North Sea and Atlantic (hence the sinking of the Lusitania being the starting point of Britain's involvement) 2 Tensions within colonial countries regarding their individual colonies and wish to gain further territories, 3 The tension between Germany and France over Alsace Lorraine This is in addition to the issues already mentioned between Russia and the Austro Hungarian Empire Franz Ferdinand was only the starting pistol, the powder kegs were already lined up......

Well, it all started in the 19th cenutury with the Franco-Prussian wars with German Chancellor, Bismark. He fought many European nations such as France and won. However, he didn't humiliate them by pressing hard treaties and conditions on the countries he conquored. Yet the King, Kaiser Wielhim (William) decided not to listen to Bismark and to press very harsh terms. That lead up to WWI, but the "real war" started in 1914 and lasted until 1918. However, it really started in 1890-1918
