In California it's one of the classic books for 9th grade although one wonders why then, since it is American Literature and also an integral part of the American literary scene, and therefore perhaps should be taught in 11th grade.

Ask her, specifically, what themes she object's to. Make comparisons to some of the themes you've found in books you've already read (or seen in a movie/on t.v./ or read in the newpaper/on the web). Demonstrate your maturity & your judgement. She may relent. However, if she still refuses; It's not illegal, so if you really want to read it, check it out from the library & read it. If your mom finds out, you will get in trouble & she'll probably put you on some sort of punishment. It is a comming of age story, 50 years ago. Nowdays what you normally see on network TV has more "adult" content than what you'l find it that book. & Welcome to the world of choosing between the acceptance of censorship (as mandated by some authority figure) or choosing to expose your intellect to different ideas, concepts & viewpoints (though they may leave deep & damaging scars on your psyche). It's never an easy choice, so look into yourself & weigh the pro's and con's. Good luck! With all due respect, I read it about the same age you are. I found it pointless & depressing.

In Jamaica, a list of books are prescribed for us on the syllabus and that one is not on it. But I read it in my senior year of high school. It was one of those books that you must read before you die. Salinger was a great author. Have you read "The Great Gatsby", I would love to read that book.

Didn't read it in high school. Read it the year I took off from college. Seemed like the appropriate book to read at the time...it was.

7th. I found it at the library and had heard about it and read it.
Personally, I thought it was a fairly good book.
