The reason is Cuba is communist and "a wasteland" I might add. Why would you want to, Cuba isn't exactly a Paradise, not anymore.

This is how I see it:

1. The US government does not really care if Americans go to Cuba or not. I think the real reason is that the anti-Castro groups in Miami (who are politically divided into Republicans and Democrats) represent a lot of votes in election time in the US. These groups do not want Americans to go and spend money in Cuba because at the end of the day, this money will end up in Castro's coffers.

2. It is not convenient for Castro to allow the flow of American tourists into Cuba because they are going to show the Cuban people that only at 90 miles away from them, there is a free a democratic country where you can be what you want to be.

That's how I see it.

Just a couple of years ago, both houses of congress voted to allow travel to Cuba, but the part about Cuba travel was removed from the bill because the Republicans were still in control of congress and they didn't want a presidential veto.

That was an unusual event because when both houses of congress are in agreement on something, with identical wording, then they do not generally alter it in the bill.

But in this case the bill reconciliation committee members did change it. Maybe there will be a new vote and we will have travel freedom after the next election.

Technically U.S. citizens are allowed to travel to Cuba. The law basically says that one cannot spend money there so that is the problem and that is what will get you a fine upon your return to the US. Although if you are part of a missionary group or welfare group or a member of the press you can obtain permission to travel to Cuba. Most U.S. citizens that do go to Cuba go from Canada or from other Caribbean islands such as Turks and Caicos or Antigua. However, once you return to the U.S. be prepared to be pulled aside by customs and to pay a fine that could be up to $10,000.

. The reason there is an embargo is very simple and it can be summarized with the words "Miami Cubans" and "Swing State"

When Castro took over, some wealthy Cubans lost their property. They ended up in Miami, Florida - and they have a lot of political power. Under the American Electoral College system, the states vote as a block. - Whichever presidential candidate gets the most votes in a particular state gets all of that state's electoral votes. Florida has a large population, so it gets to cast a large number of Electoral Votes in the presidential election.

Florida has about an equal number of people who tend to vote for the Democratic candidate for president and the Republican candidate for president. For that reason it is called a "Swing State." (In the 2000 presidential election, the popular vote for president in Florida was decided by only a few hundred votes.and all of Florida's Electoral votes were awarded to Bush which made him president.)

Neither Democrats nor the Republicans want to alienate the wealthy Miami Cubans, who contribute to political campaigns and who want to take down Castro - and so U.S, policy has not changed for more than 40 year even though Cuba is no threat.

While the Embargo is very hard on the average Cuban citizen, in a small way Cuba and the tourists who visit it may be better off because of the Embargo, because Cuba is the only major tourist destination in the world that has not been completely contaminated by American culture and fast food restaurants. In addition, Cuba has a good record in protecting its environment, in part because American corporations have not been permitted to exploit its resources.

Mainly because of the cuban missile crisis (google it), America and Cuba are enemies.
Since they're enemies, Americans can't go to Cuba because of the "trading with the enemy" act which means that if you spend any money in Cuba you're supporting their government (taxes etc).

For totally irrational and bigoted reasons would be the answer. I went and have never met more lovely & generous people.

I agree with the reasoned response that notes the influence of some conservative Miami expats (they just want their property back). I'm sure there are some human rights abuses (e.g. quarantining people who are HIV+, as of 1993), but they far outweight the medical care and social benefits that exceed those in the US.

Simpatizante Cuba Estado Libre Asociado de US.
