It starts with the raising of our children teaching them that violence is not the answer and you yourself not being violent, these children learn from us.

This is rather a generic question for a complex and serious problem....

The prevalence of domestic violence is two fold. The abuser that can't control his/her emotions and violent tendencies, and the abused who keeps making excuses for the abuser. Unfortunately, many (not all) people in these situations are not secure on their own. They are afraid they can't make it on their own without the abuser. They make excuses for the abuser, and believe it was partly their fault. It is a vicious cycle.

How can we help and prevent it? We can't.... for the most part. It takes an abused to stand up for themselves and make the first step. After that, there are many places and systems that can help. Perhaps we can support and donate those places who provides services ONCE the abused makes the first step.

By the way, I know few people in these situations. They are all adults. Last thing they want is someone to interfere with them before they are ready. Yes, even when they are beaten.

Anyone convicted of Domestic Violence should do a mandatory 2 years in prison, increasing 2 years each additional conviction. People have got to learn, violence has got to stop. Also you find 95% of these are because of alcohol. Their sentence should include intensive alcohol counseling.
