There is a very long history of abortion around the world. Many times, the legality of abortion is/was based on population; whether there was a need for fewer or more people within a country. China has permitted only one child per family so abortion is promoted there in the case of another pregnancy. In this case, abortion is not forced, but the family then faces economic penalties. Also, there was some use of it in the genocide of groups of people around the world.

There has been much worldwide debate about it by Christians concerning the morality of abortion. It has long been permitted for medical reasons and later for emotional reasons such as in rape cases in many countries. The U.S. made it a Constitutional right in the early '70s for a woman to have an abortion. It has caused a huge division within the country ever since effecting our society especially in the political arena.

Look up statistics relating to birth control and women's rights specifically. The major issue surrounding abortion is that women were having it done so what needed to be done is legalization to ensure safety for the health of women. Studies showed that women would have abortions when they were illegal and the end result was that many thousands of women died or suffered sterilization. Legalizing abortion saved women's lives.
