It means it ran out of R134A refrigerant or has a leak. Checking the pressure and filling it with refrigerant is a simple do-it-yourself job. The recharge kit includes step-by-step directions. Make sure to check the pressure first.

This could be anything from a blown fuse to a leak. Start the car and look at the compressor, is the very front of the pulley turning, which is the clutch,. If not check all fuses, if the fuses check ok this can be caused by low gas charge. The pressure switch sees the pressure is low and will not alow the compressor clutch to kick in. check to see if there are traces of oil around the compressor pulley or on any of the lines, if you see any there is a leak. In front of the radiator is the condenser, make sure it's not blocked by grass, leaves, bugs and dirt.

As previous posters have mentioned, you may simply need to recharge the system (i.e. add more refrigerant). This is provided that your car wasn't made before 1993. Those cars that are 1993 or older used R12 refrigerant which is no longer used as it is seen as an environmental ozone danger. There are R12 alternative such as Freeze-12 which can be used, but requires that you completely discharge the system of the old R12 first. However, if your car is newer than 1993, then you can simply use the R134a mentioned previously.

how old is the car? If its an older model it may use R-12 refrigerate in which only a licensed shop or mechanic can recharge but if its 134A you can do it yourself. Get a system pressure check done to check for leaks first though.
