*jumps up and down* EMO IS NOT PUNK! EMO IS NOT GOTH!!!! THEY ARE NOT ALIKE! THEY ARE DIFFERENT!!!!!!!!!
I'm really really really sorry about the caps to indicate my screaming. But, emo isn't punk or goth!!! Emo was pulled from the subcultures of both punk and goth, but they are not the same thing. They are virtually nothing alike.
Punk is more of a life-style I guess you could say.
Goth is more of a mind-set.
Emo is a MUSIC GENRE!
Scene is the style.

I don't know when emo became a style, but it's down right pathetic that we call eachother 'emo'. When orginally it is a music genre.

Oh yes, and Fall Out Boy, Panic! At the Disco, My Chemical Romance...NOT EMO! Some emo bands would be Rites of Spring, Embrace, One Last Wish, Beefeater, Gray Matter, Fire Party, Moss Icon, etc.

Ok, some background, Emo started in the late 1980s. The lyrics kinda like punk lyrics...but "deeper"

'Emos' are usually queit people, they are sometimes sensitive and more "in-tune" with their emotions.
They write poetry on; depression, confusion, and anger.

NOT ALL EMOS CUT!!!!!! (sorry for the screaming again)

One more thing, some people say that an emo is over senstive and cries alot....can't toddlers be oversensitive and blow things out of proporation...don't toddlers cry alot?
How many emo toddlers are there now?

Sorry if I sounded rude or anything...the rudeness was not directed towards you...just so you know.

I'm my day (eighties!) it was called 'teenage angst'. Today it's emo. You can spot an emo by the long side fringe over one eye, skinny jeans (boys and girls - bit of an androgenous look going on), who will listen to emo bands like Funeral for a Friend or My Chemical Romance, probably profess to a bit of self-harming, write a bit of poetry, that kind of thing. Byron and Shelley would have been the emos of the Romantic period.

Emo music is a type of soft music mixed with punk music. People who like this type of music are labeled as emos. The average emo wears tight wool sweaters, tighter jeans and itchy scarfs and clothes all year long. Certain emos are slightly suicidal and feel it is right to cut themselves. Some wear tight uncomfortable or itchy clothes and don't cut themselves. Some people just listen to emo music or wear emo clothes. I have talked to kids who are emos and have emo characteristics.

You are going to get alot of answers to this question.
Some say it is a genre of music, this is a kind of indie/punk/rock mixture. Its hard to define.
This type of music is very emotional (hense the "Emo")
These songs usually tackle subjects like drugs and depression, which to be fair do need to be talked about more.
Emo could also be defined as a style of clothes, mostly black, greys and red. Tight drainpipe skinny jeans, band hoodies etc.
It can also be refered to as a way of thinking, that the people who are stereotyped "emo" are very emotional people. This is where the idea that "emos" slit their rists. This is NOT true. Most people like this have to find an outlet for their strong feelings and this is channeled into the music they listen to, not self harm.
It could be any mixture of these and other things.
However these people shouldnt be stereotyped and labelled for their likes and dislikes, and how they chose to live their lives. The term "emo" is used alot in bullying, when those commonly refered to as "chavs" pick on those different to them and use this as something to take the piss about.
I hope this helped.
p.s Dont judge these people.

This question has been asked so many times. and you know what people NEVER give the correct answers! there for the person who asked never finds the correct answer (at least from here) my advice is don't ask. lol.
there is emo music.
emo doesnt mean (despite what others say) a person who cuts themself, listens to depressing music, dresses in black or any of that stuff. dont listen to what other say. go meet an "emo" person an ask them what it is to them thats all your gonna get is opinions. thats all anyone can say for an answer is their opinion of what emo is. so there isnt a real answer lol.

Emo is a genre of music. It is short for emotional. Some of the music is alright, but the term used to describe it is totally lame.
